Islamic Jurisprudence

Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) represents a discipline of Islamic theology that deals with the development of norms to regulate Muslim social life. It is characterised by the variability of norms and is determined by time and space as well as by internal plurality and diversity. Therefore, its normative content can be traced back to different maḏāhib (schools of thought within Islamic jurisprudence). On this basis, research and teaching in the research area of Islamic Jurisprudence take a comprehensive and comparative approach, and there is a historical as well as a systematic research direction, which interact. Thus, the aim is to reflect on contemporary discourses on Islamic law as well as on current societal debates, especially with regard to Muslims in Europe, by acquiring deeper knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence.
