The Alevi Hızır Fasting

08.02.2022

On February 8, the Hızır fast begins for Alevis, one of the most important events in the calendar of festivities. With a three-day fast in honour of the patron saint Hızır, Alevis celebrate the end of the Hızır month that began in mid-January.

According to the Alevi understanding of faith, Hızır comes to the aid of people who are in distress.

Hızır takes on different shapes and forms and, according to this belief, can be anyone who comes to the aid of another person.

To this day, it is customary to distribute pastries (Hızır Lokması) to friends and acquaintances at the end of Lent and to conclude the Hızır month with a Cem ceremony.
