What sets us apart

As the first department in Europe, we combine an Islamic and an Alevi branch. Since its foundation in 2017, the Department of Islamic-Theological Studies (IITS) has made a significant contribution to the development of theology and religious education in both academic study and research.

Students at the IITS receive a thorough academic education to become theologians, religious counsellors or religious education teachers. The study programmes include:

  • 2 Bachelor's degree programmes
  • 1 Master's degree programme
  • 1 PhD programme
  • 2 extension curricula

Our research focuses on five key areas. In theology, we engage in fundamental theological research as well as contemporary and historical analysis of primary and secondary sources. Our work in religious education focuses on religious teaching and learning processes, as well as empirical perspectives and methods.
