Interdisciplinary Symposium "Musik und Lyrik im Alevitentum" [Music and Poetry in Alevism]

15.10.2021

Alevi ritual practice consists of various elements: Music, recitation of centuries-old poetry and the individual interaction through the Semah movement. On October 15 and 16, 2021, a symposium will be held in Weingarten that will shed light on this topic.

Music as a carrier of content and vehicle of oral tradition in connection with the cultural history of Alevism in Turkey as well as in the diaspora in the past and present is a good starting point for a self-empowering examination and research of Alevism. Which lyrical texts from the early days of Alevism are still known today? What melodies still resound from the long-necked lute (saz) today? Can Alevi music, the commandment of takiyeh and popular culture be thought together?
