The Muharram fast is of great importance to the Alevis, as Imam Hüseyin and 72 of his followers were killed by the troops of Caliph Yazid in Karbala in 680 AD. To commemorate the tragedy of Karbala and to encourage social harmony, for 12 days people abstain from meat, clear liquids and celebrations. To raise awareness of the importance of living together in harmony after the fast, Ashura (Aşure), a sweet soup made from various grains, fruits and nuts, is prepared and shared with neighbours and the community.
Ashura (Aşure) is the symbol of unity and tradition in Alevism. The dish, which consists of twelve different ingredients, is also considered a gift in memory of the twelve imams. At the same time, it is a sign of gratitude that Imam Hussein's son Zeynel Abidin survived due to his illness in Karbala, as this means that the genealogy of Imam Ali can be continued.
