Muharrem Fast of the Alevi

31.08.2019

The Muharrem Fast of the Alevi is a symbol for a fair, equal and communal Coexistence

During the twelve days long Muharrem fast (a period of mourning) between 31st August and 11th September, the Alevis commemorate the Holy Imam Hüseyin and the Twelve Imams. This period of mourning centres around the so-called Kerbala Event in 680 AD, during which Imam Hüseyin and 72 of his followers found death due to their advocacy for justice at the hands of the army of the Caliph Yazid.

Mutual respect, compassion and concordance (Rızalık) are now more important for a harmonious cohabitation of humans than ever. The Alevi fast period requires abstinence, focus and contemplation during 12 days and nights. Those fasting also avoid the consumption of meat and pure liquids.

The end of the twelve days long fasting period is celebrated by Aşure dish, which is gifted to friends, family and neighbours. This meal prepared from twelve different ingredients is seen as an offering in the memory of the Twelve Imams. Among others, it is also a symbol for the appreciation of Zeynel Abidin, the son of Imam Hüseyin, who survived the Event due to his illness and who could continue the family line of Imam Ali.
