Klassiker der islamischen Literatur: Lesung aus dem Maḥṣūl

20.02.2025

In the summer semester 2025, the Department is offering a new extra-curricular reading course on the legal compendium al-Maḥṣūl fī ʿilm uṣūl al-fiqh by the speculative theologian and legal scholar Faḫr ad-Dīn ar-Rāzī (d. 1210). The individual sessions of the course will deal with the linguistic-theoretical introduction to this work, which is characterised by problems in the philosophy of language.

The work, as the title suggests, represents the result of the discussions on linguistic, legal-theoretical and normative issues that had taken place in the šāfiʿite legal tradition up to this time. Renowned scholars recognise the epochal significance of this work in legal history and particularly appreciate its well-founded linguistic theory and linguistic philosophy. The reading from the Maḥṣūl will be supplemented at appropriate points by other works by ar-Rāzī, with relevant text passages being summarised in German and made available to participants in the form of a handout.

The event will take place in hybrid format.
