Arabic is not only the language of the Koran and the Prophet Muhammad, but has also been established as the language of administration, literature and Islamic academia in the early centuries of Islam. As such, it is fundamental for studying Islamic Theology. Therefore, learning the language gives students an insight into the rich and centuries-old Islamic tradition. On that basis, the research area Arabic at the Department aims at enabling students to critically examine, read and analyse classical texts of Islamic theology in their original language. Therefore, other contents such as text segments of Islamic primary sources, Islamic history, Kalām and Tafsīr are taught in addition to grammar. The variety taught at the Department of Islamic-Theological Studies is Classical Arabic.
